Shien Lee's Heron Corset

This corset was custom made for the beautiful, and very kind Shien Lee. A long time ago, she saw a corset I had made for another client and fell in love with the fabric. She asked me to use the same fabric to make an over-bust corset. Shien patiently waited on my list until I was able to accept her order. I just completed it. I hope she likes what I have created for her.

This corset is made of a cotton upholstery fabric with asymmetrical print that required careful pattern matching. It has a layer of cotton rip stop and a layer of strong, brushed cotton twill. It is made with a twill waist tape, a combination of flat and spiral steel boning, and steel lacing bones with two piece brass eyelets. The binding is cross iridescent silk in antique gold and black. The colors combined create an antique sage that complements the print. The corset is laced with strong antique gold poly satin ribbon. I included black ribbon as well so she could change it if she wished.

This style has a diagonal empire seam in the front, just under the bust. Because the pattern is asymmetrical, I had to change the placement of the seam lines and incorporate the empire seam. In this way I was able to show more of the bird and it's surroundings without chopping up the design too much. I had to butcher over 2 yards of 54" wide fabric to get the pieces needed to create a balanced design.

There is a built in front modesty panel under the busk, and a separate back lacing protector (my own design) in back. This lacing protector design is unique and special in that it is suspended perfectly between the back edges by the ribbon laces. When you lace up, it falls right into place. It does not gather up and there is no need to struggle to smooth it out. Shien can easily, and confidently lace up without assistance. I believe the waist is 21" including a 2" gap in back.

I hope to see photos of Shien wearing this corset. She is beautiful and this corset suits her so perfectly.

Ah! Oh Alexis I am absolutely floored- the corset looks amazing! The back panel is a fantastic touch. Thank you for taking the extra measures for shipping- I'll surely reimburse you for your trouble with my next order with you. I'm already thinking about the next corset design! I can imagine how challenging it must have been to piece together the design. It's just perfect- a shining testament to your skill and creative vision. Ah, can't stop staring.. to think, it's really mine! Thank you!

I'm so glad you like it! :) You never really know how these corsets with asymmetrical pattern matching will look because there is no way to plan the pattern. The corset decides what it wants to look like, and it's always a surprise to see it come together. i am very pleased with it and I am so glad you are as well. :) No need to reimburse me for anything, silly!

This corset is incredible, I admire your ability to match patterns. You really inspire me, you seem to have such integrity and talent. I am currently taking a draping course in which I am planning to make a dress with a corset top. If it's not too much of a bother could you give me some advice on where to get quality boning and a good grommet setter. I have been needing a good grommet setter for quite some time. A friend of mine told me that there are only two companies that make steel boning. She also said that you could use something called brick layers steel in place of boning, do you know anything more about this?

Thank you very much! I have never heard about brick layers steel, but there is a huge list of corset supply sellers on the corsetmaking forum. Look on the memories page, which can be found on the user info page. I know of only two boning manufacturers, but you have to buy huge quantities. 50 lb rolls of the stuff, and there is a minimum.
http://community.livejournal.com/corsetmakers/
Tandy leather has nice grommet setters for under $100. It's called the Craftool and works very well. It is a table mounted press. You can also buy directly from Stimpson, but they are expensive and the Craftool works just as well.
After you check the memories on corsetmakers, ask the corset makers where they buy their tools and supplies. I usually buy in bulk.
Good luck with your project. I hope to see it when it's complete!

thank you very much for the complement and the link. I was not aware of the brown dress project and yes, I am very interested in it! thank you very much. I have always been conflicted with fashion. It is my craft. I am good at it and enjoy my work but i do not agree with the industry, materialism, and waste. My beliefs are much more in line with minimalism, comfort, simplicity , environmental accountability and focus on being a better person, rather than a fashionable one. I wear jammies all day at work, and jeans and t-shirts when i go out. No one would guess i make corsets. Despite being at the top of my class at the fashion institute, I was hesitant to get a job in the fashion industry because I disagree with everything it stands for. that's why I make custom clothing that will last generations, for real people, with real bodies. My goal is to make a garment conform to the person, rather than the other way around, and to make the most of what each client has. It's not the same as wearing the same dress every day, but it is the best way I know to reconcile the conflict between my love for creating garments, and my hatred for "fashion". I truly appreciate your thoughtfulness in sending me that link. Thank you!

Oh my god Alexis, that is spectacular. You're so skilled at those little touches...I love how you made the back lacing panel so that it has this perfectly centered design on it. And the empire seams are so clever. How exquisite - I can't wait to see photos of it worn!

Speaking of worn, this is making me long to find an excuse to wear my corset by you now. I haven't in ages - I'm working full time at an animal shelter, not exactly the kind of place I can wear a corset, haha! And I just don't get out much. But now I'm inspired - I need to go find myself a cute dress I can wear the corset with and show it off. Poor thing hasn't been worn since I started work in September and it's gathering dust, and it's a shame! I still haven't really lost much weight (I'm trying, but not super hard, haha), so I should wear it while I still can. I hope that if and when I do reach my weight loss goal I can manage to get another from you. Will cross my fingers you're not horribly busy next year ;)

thank you very much. how have you been? Are you enjoying working at the animal shelter? it would be a difficult job for me because I would get to emotionally involved and be sad all the time.
I made myself a corset (finally), many months ago, and I STILL haven't worn it (other than around the house a few times just to see how long I could wear it). I'm at home most of the time, and when I'm not, I am running errands and am not really interested in looking good or starting up a conversation about my corset. hehe. Always in too much of a hurry, so I can understand where you are coming from with yours.
If you email me, I can add you to my waiting list.
thanks for taking the time to comment!

I'm also SO happy that you are so busy, it means your successful!

Anyway...I wanted to thank you again for this beautiful corset you made me. I'll love it forever.

Morgan! I'm so glad you still like the corset I made you! That was back in Spring of 2005. I remember the pictures you sent me. You said it was early and you were tired. Were you ever able to lace up tighter? I would love to see it fully laced. :) You look so sultry in that photo. Very pretty.

Thank you:
